My answer to this just a few months ago would have been "To make people happy"
Now I would answer "To be true to myself"
Now being true to yourself doesn't mean that you
aren't willing to make others happy,
it just means you do it when you want, not when they want..
I have found that you can be too nice..
Anyway, I was, so people would take advantage of that,
but when I needed their help they were never able to help me..
The cool thing is that it didn't make me bitter,
instead it taught me not to deny my needs or wants.
It also taught me Self Respect..
Such a valuable lesson :D
So valuable, that I can not be mad at the people who were teaching me these lessons..
I needed to learn boundaries,
How to say no, and the biggest
when to say "Enough".
I know that we have been taught that being selfish is a bad thing,
and for people who are givers, this lesson is Sacrificial..
You are already a giver, and would put others before yourself naturally, because you
are aware and sensitive to others needs and desires.
You my dear, like me, need instead to accept the awareness of the
others needs and feeling,
yet keep your boundaries so that you do not become the "Door mat"
To your loved ones and friends..
Self Respect, Boundaries and Love for yourself
needs to "Come First!"
